The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has launched a collaborative initiative with agricultural landowners across the state to improve water quality and promote conservation practices on working farms and ranches.

The program focuses on voluntary best management practices (BMPs) that help reduce nutrient runoff, protect wetlands, and improve overall water quality in Florida's rivers, lakes, and springs. Participating landowners receive technical assistance and, in some cases, cost-share funding to implement approved conservation measures.

In Polk County, several agricultural operations have already enrolled in the program, implementing practices such as improved irrigation management, cover cropping, and riparian buffer zones along waterways. These efforts contribute directly to the health of the Peace River watershed and Lake Okeechobee basin.

"Florida farmers are committed stewards of the land," said a DEP spokesperson. "This collaboration recognizes that agriculture and environmental protection go hand in hand. When we work together, we achieve better outcomes for both the farming community and Florida's natural resources."
